It is very healthy and used in sweet and savoury dishes, but my favourite way of using it is to substitute in vegan pastries.

It is a basic recipe that I learned from my mother, but despite being so simple, it is delicious, and I will never get tired of it.

In addition, it can be a very light dessert, although you can also have it as a healthy (and delicious!) Breakfast or snack.

On the other hand, it is a very versatile recipe since you can prepare an endless number of dishes with it, and you can also customize it as you want.

How to Make Applesauce - Step by Step
Step-by-step photos of how to make applesauce

  • Peel the apples and remove the core (photo 1).
  • Dice them (photo 2).
  • Add the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon stick, water and lemon juice (photo 3). Put the heat to maximum, and when it starts to boil, put it over medium heat. Let it cook until it has the desired texture (about 30-40 minutes) (photo 4), stirring from time to time.
  • Remove the cinnamon stick (photo 5). Beat the Applesauce or use a food mill or fork to not runny (photo 6).
  • Serve it alone or use it as an egg substitute in pastries.

Advice

  • You can use any apples, although the best are Golden and Pippin for their flavour and because they cook faster.
  • I used brown sugar, although you can use any sweetener such as stevia, syrups or molasses.
  • I recommend that you add a little sugar, try the Applesauce, and if it seems a little sweet to you, add more so you're sure not to overdo it.
  • The lemon juice helps to preserve the Applesauce for a longer time and that it does not turn so brown, but if you want, you can eliminate it, especially if you prefer the Applesauce very sweet.
  • This recipe is perfect for taking advantage of apples that are starting to get ugly.

Can I make applesauce without sugar?

Of course! If you do not want to use sugar, you can chop some dates and beat the Applesauce at the end or directly do not add anything because the apples already provide a sweet flavour.

How long does applesauce last?

This recipe is made with fresh and natural ingredients, so store it in an airtight container in the fridge for about 5-7 days once it has cooled down.

How to serve this applesauce

Applesauce is vibrant spread on bread because, after all, it is a kind of jam and is an ideal alternative for those who do not like the texture or the taste of fruit very much.

It is also ideal for the little ones to have a sweet and healthy snack at the same time.

I also use it as an egg substitute in pastry recipes such as vegan brownies or vegan pancakes, although you can add many other recipes!

You can substitute an egg for 1/4 cup of applesauce (4 tablespoons).
